Improving Fairness for Adaptive HTTP Video Streaming
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents an analysis of a suggested method for improving fairness among competing adaptive HTTP video streams. The metrics used as fairness indicators are differences in achieved average rate and stability among the competing streams. The method analyzed is based on changing a fixed and equal video segment request rate of each stream, to either a per session unique or random request rate. The analysis is done by means of measurements in a controlled environment using the Microsoft Smooth Streaming solution. The findings are considered very positive as they show that it is possible to achieve a significant improvement in fairness by applying the suggested method. The main novelty of the paper is that it demonstrates the potential of achieving such improvements without modifying either client or server algorithms.

A priority-based adaptive scheme for multi-view live streaming over HTTP
Adaptive streaming over Hypertext Transport Protocol (HTTP) has been widely used for the transmission of video content. Most of the existing studies about HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) concentrate on improving resource efficiency, fairness among users, and quality of service for single-source videos. However, there is a growing number of live streaming applications, such as video-casts of cours...
متن کاملCross-layer Energy Optimization for Dynamic Video Streaming Over Wi-Fi
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) constitutes a large fraction of traffic in the mobile Internet. Mobile devices often use video delivery over Wi-Fi, which is a significant energy drain. Dynamic Power Saving Mode (DPSM) is one of the most widely-used approaches for Wi-Fi devices to save power and shorten packet delay. However, DPSM uses a fixed timeout before a device goes to sleep, l...
متن کاملImproving Fairness in QoS and QoE domains for Adaptive Video Streaming
This paper presents an enhancement to a category of Adaptive Video Streaming solutions aimed at improving both Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). The specific solution used as baseline for the work is the Smooth Streaming framework from Microsoft. The presented enhancement relates to the rate adaptation scheme used, and suggests applying a stochastic or fixed/unique setti...
متن کاملTFDASH: A Fairness, Stability, and Efficiency Aware Rate Control Approach for Multiple Clients over DASH
Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) has recently been widely deployed in the Internet and adopted in the industry. It, however, does not impose any adaptation logic for selecting the quality of video fragments requested by clients and suffers from lackluster performance with respect to a number of desirable properties: efficiency, stability, and fairness when multiple players compete fo...
متن کاملRepresentation Switch Smoothing for Adaptive HTTP Streaming
When an adaptive media streaming system has to switch from one representation of the content to another, the switch causes viewer distraction. We introduce the concept of representation switch smoothing for alleviating the distraction and improving the overall quality of experience. As adaptive HTTP streaming systems typically deploy video buffers on the client side, the adaptation decision is ...
